Sardinia Itinerary (8 Days)
This comprehensive travel guide to Sardinia will take you through the most impressive attractions in Alghero, Olbia, Porto Cervo, Costa Smeralda, and Baunei. You’ll discover historic towns, stunning beaches, and coastal trails, as well as locations renowned for their unique natural landscapes and the clear waters of the Mediterranean. Memorable experiences await, from visits to historical sites to relaxing on some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. The proposed itinerary is inspired by my own experience, and all information is 100% original.
Our Itinerary: 8 Days in Sardinia
Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Olbia
We landed in Alghero around 2:30 pm, and a month prior to our arrival, we rented a car through Booking with Sicily by Car to easily get around the island. Although we reserved a Jeep, we were given an MG model, which was comfortable and practical for Sardinia’s roads. In Sardinia, a car is essential for reaching the most beautiful beaches and destinations far from the towns, as public transport is limited, especially along the coast.
Our accommodation was in Olbia, approximately 130 km from Alghero, and after checking in, we headed to a nearby pizzeria, Il Vesuvio Ristorante, to enjoy an authentic Italian pizza. It’s important to note that restaurants in Sardinia have specific hours: they serve lunch from 12:30-2:30 pm and dinner from 7:30-11:00 pm. We recommend checking each restaurant’s schedule online.
Day 2: Day Trip to the Baunei Coast
On the second day, we spent exploring the spectacular Baunei coast on a day trip booked online through GetYourGuide. We left Olbia early in the morning for the port of Santa Maria Navarrese, about 150 km away (around an hour and a half by car). Parking in the area can be challenging, so we left early to ensure we found an available spot. At the port, we found a few cafés where we enjoyed a cappuccino and croissant before boarding—a perfect start to our adventure-filled day.
The boat trip included four impressive stops, each revealing the unique beauty of this wild part of Sardinia:
- Cala Sisine: Our first stop was Cala Sisine Bay, a beach with white sand and crystal-clear water. We had time to swim and relax on the shore, taking in the stunning natural scenery.
- Cala Goloritze: We passed by Cala Goloritze, famous for its impressive rock rising from the sea and shimmering turquoise waters. Although we only admired this beach from the boat, the view from a distance was absolutely breathtaking.
- Cala Mariolu: The next stop was Cala Mariolu, a beautiful beach where the sand is mixed with small white pebbles. The water is an incredibly bright blue, perfect for swimming and admiring the marine landscape.
- Cala Luna: Our last stop was at Cala Luna, a beach renowned for its spectacular landscapes and the cliffs that surround it. We had the opportunity to stroll along the fine sand and enjoy the crystal-clear waters, making it a perfect place for relaxation and exploration.
It’s good to know that lunch is not included in the trip’s price, though the organizers offer a small appetizer on board. However, for those wanting more, food and drinks can be purchased directly on the boat.
Day 3: Porto Cervo – Elegance and Charm of the Emerald Coast
On the third day, the cloudy weather gave us the perfect opportunity to explore Porto Cervo, one of the most exclusive and refined destinations on the Emerald Coast, located just a short distance from Olbia. Founded in the 1960s by Prince Aga Khan, Porto Cervo is now renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, luxurious beaches, and splendid landscapes, attracting tourists from around the world.
Attractions and Activities to Explore in Porto Cervo:
- Piazzetta: The central square in Porto Cervo is the heart of the town. Flanked by luxury boutiques, cafés, and art galleries, this lively spot is ideal for a leisurely stroll, admiring the unique architecture and elegant atmosphere. Stopping by a local café for a cappuccino is a great way to start the day Italian-style.
- Marina di Porto Cervo: The marina is famous for its spectacular yachts and cosmopolitan vibe. Here, visitors can admire the luxurious boats docked or stroll along the pier, enjoying the impressive view. The port is one of the largest and most beautiful in the Mediterranean, offering a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of Sardinia.
- Stella Maris Church: This simple yet elegant white church offers a panoramic view of the port and sea. Its interior houses valuable works of art and provides a peaceful retreat, in contrast to the bustling port area.
- Mario Cesare Museum of Modern Art: An ideal spot for contemporary art enthusiasts, this museum hosts works by Italian and international artists. It’s a creative space that adds a cultural touch to a visit to Porto Cervo.
- Luxury Shopping: Porto Cervo is an ideal destination for luxury shopping enthusiasts, with an impressive selection of designer stores. Here, you can find renowned boutiques such as Prada, Versace, and Gucci, offering an exclusive shopping experience.
Lunch at Hivaoa Ristorante Pizzeria
After a morning of exploration, we chose to have lunch at Hivaoa Ristorante Pizzeria, a restaurant known for its authentic Italian dishes. With a varied menu, the restaurant offers both delicious pizza and local seafood dishes. The friendly atmosphere and attentive service perfectly complemented our dining experience.
Whether you’re interested in shopping, art, or simply a stroll through one of the most beautiful coastal towns, Porto Cervo enchants with its elegance and scenic beauty.
Day 4: Exploring the Historic Center of Olbia, Shopping, and the Seaport
The fourth day was perfect for immersing ourselves in the culture and history of Olbia, and the slightly unpredictable weather gave us a good reason to visit cultural attractions and discover the charm of the port and historic center.
Discovering the Historic Center
- Basilica of San Simplicio: This 11th-century Romanesque church, one of the oldest in Sardinia, is a place of tranquility and reflection, as well as an important historical landmark. Built from local granite and adorned with ancient frescoes, the basilica honors the town’s patron saint, St. Simplicius, making it a must-see for history and architecture lovers.
- Civic Square and Historic Streets: A walk through Olbia’s historic center reveals cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and a lively atmosphere. In the central square, we found cafés and restaurants where we could enjoy a coffee, as well as small shops selling authentic souvenirs and handicrafts where visitors can purchase traditional products.
- Visit to Olbia’s Seaport: We continued our day with a visit to Olbia’s maritime port, one of Sardinia’s most important. From here, we admired the peaceful view of docked boats and the vibrant activity of the port. It’s a gateway for excursions to other Sardinian islands and an important connection for those traveling between mainland Italy and Sardinia. The coastal ambiance offered us an authentic glimpse into local life, and the view of the sea and boats of various sizes was truly relaxing.
Shopping for Souvenirs and Local Delicacies
We explored the central area’s shops to pick up a few unique souvenirs. Olbia is known for its handcrafted coral products, hand-painted ceramics, and traditional textiles, as well as local delicacies like Sardinian honey, pecorino cheese, and mirto liqueur.
- Olio Olbia Mall: For a more modern shopping experience, we visited Olio Olbia Mall, where we found both renowned Italian brands and local stores offering authentic Italian quality. The mall is an excellent choice for souvenir shopping and a relaxing break in a comfortable atmosphere.
- Spiaggia La Salina: Toward the end of the day, we made a brief stop at La Salina Beach, enjoying the coastal scenery and sea breeze, even if the weather wasn’t ideal for a beach day.
Tips for this Day:
- Check opening hours before visiting Basilica San Simplicio.
- Olbia’s port is ideal for a leisurely stroll and as a starting point for sea excursions.
Our day in Olbia was a well-rounded experience, filled with history, culture, and relaxation, perfectly complemented by a walk through the port and historic center.
Day 5: Alghero and Spiaggia La Pelosa – A Day of Historic Exploration and Beach Relaxation
On the fifth day, we enjoyed a perfect blend of historical exploration in Alghero and a relaxing afternoon at the famous La Pelosa Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia.
Morning in Alghero
- Starting the Day at Bar Focaccia Milese: We began the morning with a flavorful coffee and a focaccia at Bar Focaccia Milese, a local favorite known for its authentic snacks. We enjoyed the view of the bustling streets in the morning and the vibrant atmosphere of the town.
- Visit to Torre di Sant’Elmo: After breakfast, we headed to Torre di Sant’Elmo, one of Alghero’s historic watchtowers, strategically placed to guard the coast. Here, we had the chance to admire a stunning panorama of the sea and the old town, giving us insight into the city’s rich historical heritage.
- Exploring Alghero’s Old Town: We continued our walk through the historic center, with its cobbled streets and colorful buildings. Alghero is known for its distinctive Catalan architecture, and its authentic atmosphere left us truly impressed. We discovered craft shops, red coral jewelry – a symbol of the city – and souvenirs that capture the essence of Sardinia. The old town is filled with ancient churches, lively squares, and vibrant houses, offering the perfect setting to soak in the typical Sardinian ambiance.
- Local Souvenirs: Alghero is renowned for its red coral, so we chose a few unique coral jewelry pieces as souvenirs, along with other handcrafted items and local delicacies.
Afternoon at Spiaggia La Pelosa
After exploring the city of Alghero, we headed to Spiaggia La Pelosa, located about a 50-minute drive from Alghero. This beach is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Sardinia, and its beauty left us speechless.
- La Pelosa Beach: The turquoise waters, fine sand, and stunning landscape made us feel like we were in a corner of paradise. The beach is known for its crystal-clear water and its historic tower, Torre della Pelosa, which adds a unique charm to the entire area.
- Relaxation and Snorkeling: We took advantage of the clear waters and went snorkeling, admiring the schools of fish that inhabited the area. Thanks to the water’s color and excellent visibility, this beach is ideal for exploring marine life.
- Tips for Spiaggia La Pelosa: Since the beach is very popular, it is advisable to arrive early and check if a reservation is needed for access. Also, it’s good to know that you need to bring your own beach towel, as the beach has strict measures to protect its fine sand.
Conclusion for Day 5
The day was filled with a perfect combination of historical exploration in Alghero and relaxation at La Pelosa Beach. Alghero offered us an insight into history and tradition, while La Pelosa captivated us with its breathtaking landscape, making it the perfect destination to blend culture and relaxation in Sardinia.
Day 6: La Maddalena Archipelago – An Adventure Among Islands with Turquoise Waters
On the sixth day, we had a unique experience exploring the La Maddalena Archipelago, known for its spectacular beaches and unreal turquoise waters.
Before Embarkation – Coffee Break
We started the day early at the port of La Palau. Before boarding, we indulged in a fresh cappuccino and a delicious pistachio cream croissant at a nearby bar called Il Molo. The atmosphere was vibrant, and the aroma of the coffee prepared us for a day full of explorations.
Boat Excursion – Linea delle Isole – Sea Star
We booked the excursion online through Linea delle Isole – Sea Star, a company known for its well-organized tours. We set off from the port of La Palau, making memorable stops at the most beautiful locations in the archipelago.
Excursion Destinations
Spargi Island: Our first stop was Spargi Island, famous for Cala Corsara beach, where the white sand and deep blue water invited us to relax and snorkel. We explored the surroundings, enjoying the tranquility and natural beauty of the island.
Budelli Island: After Spargi, we stopped at Budelli Island to admire the Pink Beach, one of the most special beaches in Sardinia, with unique shades of pink due to coral and shells. The beach is protected, so we admired it only from the distance of the boat, but even so, the spectacle provided by this natural wonder was unforgettable.
Santa Maria Island: Our next stop was Isola di Santa Maria, home to a charming beach perfect for a brief relaxation on the fine sand. Here, we enjoyed the dreamlike landscapes and the tranquility of the place, ideal for a little break before continuing our journey through the archipelago.
Caprera Island: Before reaching the town of La Maddalena, we made a stop at Caprera Island, an ideal spot for snorkeling enthusiasts. The clear waters and abundant marine life offered us a spectacular underwater landscape. We spent wonderful moments exploring the reefs and admiring the colorful fish.
La Maddalena Town: The last stop of the day was in the town of La Maddalena, the capital of the archipelago. The town, with its narrow streets and pastel-colored buildings, gave us the chance to discover an authentic corner of Sardinia. We explored local boutiques, savored authentic gelato, and found some souvenirs to remind us of this journey.
Conclusion of the Day
The La Maddalena Archipelago enchanted us with its rarely seen beauty. Each stop had its own charm – from the Pink Beach of Budelli Island to the underwater landscape of Caprera and the authentic atmosphere of La Maddalena town. We returned to La Palau port tired but with priceless memories from a magical day at sea.
Day 7: Relaxation at Spiaggia del Principe – The Hidden Gem of Costa Smeralda
On the seventh day, we dedicated ourselves to relaxation at one of the most renowned beaches in Sardinia, Spiaggia del Principe. Located on the beautiful Costa Smeralda, this beach is known for its fine sand and vibrant blue waters, creating a dreamlike landscape.
Access and Parking
To reach the beach, we decided to arrive early, as Spiaggia del Principe is a popular destination, and parking fills up quickly during the summer season. We found convenient parking about 10 minutes from the beach, where we paid €12.5 for a full day, allowing us to enjoy our time without worrying about parking. Although we had a short hike to the beach, the trail is accessible and easy to navigate, even for families.
Landscape and Atmosphere
Spiaggia del Principe impresses with its natural charm. Framed by rocks and Mediterranean vegetation, the beach feels like a hidden oasis, ideal for those seeking a peaceful spot with a spectacular backdrop. The crystal-clear water, with shades of blue and turquoise, is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, while the soft white sand invites relaxation under the gentle Sardinian sun.
Activities and Relaxation
On the beach, we spent the day alternating between snorkeling sessions and moments of relaxation. Spiaggia del Principe is famous for its marine life, making snorkeling here a remarkable experience. In the clear waters, we spotted colorful fish and marine vegetation, transforming the area into a small underwater paradise. We also found a few secluded spots in the shade of the rocks, where we rested and admired the stunning views of the bay.
Tips for Visitors
The beach also has a bar, perfect for a snack or refreshing drink without leaving the serene atmosphere of this little corner of paradise.

Spiaggia del Principe is truly a gem of Costa Smeralda, offering a dreamlike atmosphere and a day of pure relaxation, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. When to Visit Sardinia?
The ideal time to visit Sardinia depends on your preferences regarding weather and crowd levels. Generally, the best times to travel to Sardinia are:
Spring and Autumn: From April to early June and September to early November. These periods offer pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and excellent conditions for outdoor activities like beach walks and exploring the stunning landscapes. We visited Sardinia during this time and enjoyed ideal weather and memorable experiences.
Summer: From June to August. Although temperatures can be high, Sardinia remains a popular destination. Mornings and evenings are cooler, and summer is the peak tourist season, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere.
Flights
We chose to fly with Wizz Air from Bucharest to Alghero. Sardinia has two other major airports: Cagliari and Olbia, which facilitate access to various regions of the island. It’s advisable to monitor flight availability in advance and book at least 6 months ahead to secure a good price.
Accommodation
Our vacation in Sardinia was truly unforgettable, largely due to the excellent accommodation in a comfortable apartment located in Olbia. This apartment provided an ideal base for exploring the island, being close to major attractions and beaches. Accommodation options in Sardinia are diverse, ranging from luxury and boutique hotels to cozy apartments and guesthouses, whether in cities or nearby villages. Here are some of the most popular accommodation choices:
- Grand Hotel Smeraldo Beach: A luxury hotel situated by the sea, perfect for those seeking comfort and top-notch services.
- Hotel Palau: A popular option for families, offering spacious rooms and relaxation facilities.
- B&B Villa delle Rose: A welcoming guesthouse, ideal for an authentic local experience, with a delicious breakfast included.
Entry Requirements for Sardinia
For European Citizens
Romanian citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in Italy. A valid passport or ID card is required for the entire duration of the stay.
For Non-European Citizens
Non-European citizens may require a visa to enter Italy. The specific requirements depend on the individual’s nationality and the purpose of the visit. Generally, the following steps are recommended:
- Visa Application: Check if a Schengen visa is required based on your nationality and apply at the nearest Italian consulate or embassy in your country.

- Flights: We chose to fly with Wizz Air from Otopeni to Alghero, but there are two other airports in Sardinia: Olbia and Cagliari. It’s wise to book flights in advance to secure better prices.

Transportation on the Island
To explore Sardinia in detail and reach less accessible places, renting a car is the most convenient and flexible option. We chose to rent our car through Booking, from the company Sicily by Car. At the time of picking up the car, a credit card was required for a €200 deposit, which was refunded to us after two weeks, provided we returned the car in the same condition.
If you want to easily explore the island, visit secluded beaches, or traditional villages, a rented car gives you full access and the freedom to travel on your own schedule.
Insects and Animals
- Mosquitoes: While they are not as numerous as in tropical areas, it is recommended to use mosquito spray, especially in the evening. Local sprays can be found in supermarkets.
- Reptiles: You may encounter lizards and other small reptiles, but they are harmless and helpful in keeping insects at bay.
Money
- Cash Withdrawals: You can use local ATMs to withdraw cash. Check if the ATMs charge additional fees.
- Preferred Currency: It is advisable to bring euros.
- Card Payments: Card payments are widely accepted in Sardinia at hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and shops. However, in more remote areas or small businesses (such as certain taverns, local markets, or small stores), cash payments may be preferred, and sometimes there is a minimum threshold for card transactions.
Internet SIM Cards
- Purchase: You can buy SIM cards with data from stores at the airport or in the city. Check the data options and prices to choose the most suitable one for your needs.
Food
We selected restaurants and taverns verified on Google, reading the latest reviews to ensure everything was in order. The food in Sardinia impressed us with its diversity and authentic flavors. Here are some types of Italian food we tried, along with approximate prices:
Pasta: Various types of pasta with local sauces.
Price: €10-20 (approximately $11-22)Pizza: Traditional pizza, baked in a wood-fired oven.

As for the budget, we spent around €30-40 for two people at a meal, including two main courses and two drinks at local restaurants. The Italian cuisine delighted us with its combination of flavors and fresh ingredients.
