Welcome to Genoa, a charming city that will captivate you with its rich history, vibrant port, and authentic Ligurian atmosphere!

One Day in Genoa
We began our journey in the Liguria region by arriving at Pisa International Airport. We spent the entire day exploring the city, visiting attractions such as the Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli. For more details about our day in Pisa, read here. The following two days of our vacation in the Liguria region were spent visiting the 5 picturesque villages of Cinque Terre.
A Day of Exploration and Discoveries
We took the morning train from La Spezia to Genoa, arriving early to make the most of our day. The trains are comfortable and offer stunning views of the Ligurian coast.
Casa di Cristoforo Colombo
Our first stop was Casa di Cristoforo Colombo, the birthplace of the famous explorer Christopher Columbus. Located near Porta Soprana, this house-museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of Columbus. Restored in the 15th-century style, the house preserves documents and artifacts related to the great navigator.
Piazza de Ferrari
We then headed to Piazza de Ferrari, the heart of Genoa. This central square is known for its impressive fountain and the historic buildings that surround it, such as the Ducal Palace and the Carlo Felice Theatre. Piazza de Ferrari is a vibrant, lively place, perfect for feeling the pulse of the city.
Cathedral of San Lorenzo
A few steps from Piazza de Ferrari is the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the city’s main place of worship. This Gothic cathedral dates back to the 12th century and impresses with its black-and-white façade and the richness of its architectural details. Inside, we admired the Chapel of San Giovanni Battista, which houses the remains of Saint John the Baptist.
We took a break to enjoy a delicious ice cream at Fruit and Ice Cream Factory, located near the cathedral. The artisanal ice cream, with its authentic flavors, was perfect for cooling down and recharging our batteries.
Porto Antico
After refreshing ourselves, we headed to Porto Antico, the old port of Genoa. Renovated in 1992 for Expo ’92, the port is now a vibrant area filled with attractions, shops, and restaurants. Here, we visited the Genoa Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in Europe, and admired the historic galleys displayed at the Galata Museo del Mare.
Via Garibaldi and Rolli Palaces
Our next stop was Via Garibaldi, renowned for its stunning palaces, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Rolli Palaces, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, were once the residences of Genoese aristocracy and now house museums and art galleries. We visited the Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco, admiring their art collections and sumptuous interiors.
Via Balbi and Palazzo Reale
We continued our exploration on Via Balbi, where Palazzo Reale is located. Built in the 17th century, this royal palace impresses with its grandeur and opulence. We explored its lavish halls and terraced gardens, enjoying a glimpse into the life of nobility from the past.
Spianata Castelletto
In the evening, we ascended to Spianata Castelletto, a lookout point that offers a spectacular panoramic view of the city of Genoa and its harbor. We reached it via the public elevator and enjoyed the stunning vista bathed in the warm glow of the sunset.

Additionally, crowds are lower compared to the peak season.
- March – May: The vegetation is in bloom, the scenery is stunning, and the temperatures are perfect for exploration.
- September – November: The weather remains warm, the city stays vibrant, and it’s a great time for local wine tastings and cultural events.
Summer: June to August
Summer brings higher temperatures, especially in July and August. The days are long and the sun is intense, making it a great time to enjoy nearby beaches and outdoor activities. This season is also the busiest, so it’s advisable to book accommodations and attraction tickets in advance.

How to Get to Genoa
To reach Genoa, the nearest airport is Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport. There are direct flights from various parts of Europe. For example, you can fly directly from Bucharest to Genoa with airlines such as WizzAir. Platforms like Skyscanner can help you find flight options from anywhere in the world, offering you flexibility in choosing the best options for your trip. Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport is well-connected to the city center, facilitating quick and convenient transfers.

Accommodation
To fully enjoy our experience in Genoa, we chose to stay in La Spezia, a city near the five picturesque villages of Cinque Terre, after visiting Pisa. We landed at Pisa Airport and took advantage of a few hours to explore the famous Piazza dei Miracoli, where we admired the Leaning Tower and other impressive landmarks. Afterward, we headed to La Spezia to establish our base for further exploration of Cinque Terre.
We opted for Welcome Migliarina, where we stayed for 4 nights. The apartment offered us quick access (about 1 km) to the “La Spezia Migliarina” train station, from where we departed each day to explore Cinque Terre. We appreciated the comfort and tranquility provided by our apartment after full days of adventure in Cinque Terre, Genoa, and Pisa.
Entry Requirements for Italy: European and Non-European Citizens

Additionally, we appreciated that La Spezia is relatively close to Pisa, allowing us to enjoy a visit to this historic city before settling into La Spezia.
How to Get from Genoa’s Cristoforo Colombo International Airport to the City Center
To get from Genoa’s Cristoforo Colombo International Airport to the city center, you have several transportation options:
- Train
Taking the train is a convenient option for reaching downtown Genoa.
- Volabus Shuttle: From Cristoforo Colombo Airport, you can take the Volabus shuttle, which will take you directly to Genova Piazza Principe station. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, and buses run frequently.
- Train from Genova Piazza Principe: Once at Genova Piazza Principe station, you can catch a local or regional train to other destinations within Genoa or the Liguria region.
- Bus
